Moment - “How I’ve Been Lately” “Ed Bah & Beyond”
Songs for the Self Destructive, Espo Records, 2001

1) The above album art and 2) the city of Boston.

These are about the only things I know about the short-lived, but quintessential Massachusetts indie punk band Moment. This is really one of my favorite records of the 2000s. I recall seeing Moment at the Providence College campus “pub” (i.e. ice cream stand) known as Stuart’s back in January of 2002, opening for the excessively meh pop punk band The Stryder. After just one cathartic 30 minute burst, Moment faded away (much like Stuart’s, having been replaced with a muuuch better and liquor-serving brother called McPhail’s).

Moment blew the other 3 bands off the stage that night (they went on 2nd) by encouraging a shy crowd to gather around close to the band. They killed the house lights and turned on 100 watt lamps to set an eerie, but communal tone for their passionate punk. These guys broke up about a year or two later, I think.

Here’s one off of their only record, Songs for the Self Destructive. Moment songs were unique in that they rarely had any verse/chorus/verse song structure. They were stream-of-consciousness ruminations.

Espo Records hasn’t updated their website since 2006—after getting some quality records out for bands like The Lot Six—so who knows what really happened to the guys from Moment… Does anyone out there know?
