WU LYF - “L Y F”

We saw the boys close out their tour on Saturday night in Boston, in front of a fired up 400. Amid fairly unintelligible, but short mid-song ramblings, I could have sworn I heard the lead singer say they were breaking up after this last show.

Now. Everything this band has done, from their seemingly-calculated reclusiveness (first documented band photo:)

to dropping eff bombs on Late Night with David Letterman, to singer Ellery Roberts’ ever-present Lucifer Youth Foundation denim jacket— just screams tongue-in-cheek.

So I’m hoping this was just another elaborate in-joke, because Go Tell Fire To The Mountain and their accomanying shows to support it are fantastic.

They came out for an encore to reprise the song they just played that everyone was chanting (“We Bros”) and it didn’t feel like the last time.

But only time and The Foundation will tell.

(P.S. — doesn’t this video for “L Y F”, complete with the ODB cameo at the end, just make you feel nice inside?)

Wu Lyf - “We Bros” live at Coachella

One of the lesser acts from the Year of the Tupac-ogram, these Bros from Britain evidently killed it. Here’s their set-closer, big ups Frank Ocean.

WU LYF - “Dirt”

The new Wu - these guys are interesting.

Paging Andy Kaufman.

This is quite old, but Electrofreak artist Dan Deacon is obviously the man. Many know him from his “Drinking Out of Cups” meme/internet acid trip. Seahorses rule.

Here his Dan the Man again, straight wigging out with his fly down on some NBC affiliate (in Ohio?). Imagine the average retiree/morning television-watcher tuning into this. Gold.

I need to know:

A. Who’s idea was this?

B. Did they have a job the next day?

C. Can they bottle and sell this for me?

Minus the Bear - “The Fix” and “Lemurs Man, Lemurs” live in Northampton, MA, 2008

Okay back to music.

Here’s my old favorite, Seattle experimentalists Minus the Bear. They have some skills that they would like to show you. Things get a bit more interesting when guitar mathematician Dave Knudsen gets some camera time at around 4:45. Standard shred sesh.

The first track is “The Fix” off their 2005 Menos el Oso record.

The second is the seldom heard “Lemurs Man, Lemurs” from their debut EP, 2001’s This is What I Know About Being Gigantic.

Lemurs.

I’m only posting this because it made me laugh for precisely three full minutes.

Real Estate - “It’s Real” live at Shibuya, Tokyo.

SHIBUYA

This is one of my favorite songs of 2011.

New Jersey’s Real Estate plays a bookish mix of college rock and dream pop. For once, you can’t go wrong with three part harmonies and well-ridden ride cymbal.

This song is on Side A of their 2011 record Days.
